The play blew me away. It was a new translation by Peter Oswald of a play written by Friedrich Schiller (at the time he had recently re-translated a production of Schiller's Don Carlos to similar acclaim).
Mary Stuart recounts the last days of Mary Queen of Scots which, in this translation, becomes a fast paced and absorbing thriller. Harriet Walter and Janet McTeer play the two Queens (Elizabeth I and Mary). Their portrayals are equally charismatic and powerful. The quality of writing and acting was second to none.
Totally superlative, I had to go to see it for a second time the week after first seeing it.
Xfe from time-to-time bemoans the fact that I drag him to see musicals more often that plays. I once promised him that if ever we got the chance to see one of the best two I've ever seen (the other being Mercury Fur), we would go.
How delighted was I that Mary Stuart is playing again, with Walter and McTeer reprising their original roles.
So as promised I'm taking Xfe to see it next week.

On Broadway.
