LGBT History Month

To mark LGBT History Month, in my role as a member of the diversity group and organiser of our LGBT network, I'm going to be talking about my experiences inside and outside the workplace as a gay man.

I've done all my visuals on my iPad and iPhone, going for something that looks less corporate and more personal.

All done with the finger (and it shows).

30127 - Piece Of Heaven

Saturday Women's Hour really is the perfect weekend treat.

I have had a very productive day. Organising the inside and outside of the house.

And, I've just had an email to confirm that I will be singing at the Paralympic Opening Ceremony. What fun! They aren't using singers for the Olympic one.

I have to go get measured for a costume next Saturday!

Secrets That We Keep

I have secrets.

I keep them from Xfe.

Here is where I hide them:

It amazes me that mon C has no interest in checking my blog, especially as I told him he should czech it out from time to time when he was away just to see what I was up to.

One of my tasks for the weekend is to sort out the Who stuff around the house. The memorabilia is everywhere. If I tell you that I probably have over 250 Daleks (not an exaggeration) do you sympathise with mon C? If you do, I can assure you that the majority are in boxes out of site in the cellar (where Xfe's parents told us we should have cheese and wine).

BTW I have more than twice as much Who stuff in the office as is showing in that pic to bring home before next weekend!

****, The World IS Stone

So, I interviewed 3 out of over 40 and very happily all of my 3 were offered jobs. What did I learn?
  • if you are good in your peer group, in a poor peer group, that will help
  • if you make a good impression and despite the strict criteria, if you leave the impression that you are worth having,'re worth having
  • even if you think you've ballsed up, fess up, be honest and if the interviewer doesn't ask, offer it up (although if you didn't realise then you might loose out if the interviewer doesn't bother).
What a joy it was to offer jobs. Our best candidate said they needed to consider other offers. The other two accepted immediately.

My most objectionable pick up on CV was:

" I am passionate about travel..." [emphasis added].

I pointed out that I loved my holidays and asked what the difference was. It was so very well answered!

As for myself....? Today was my appraisal. In advance I didn't sleep. I left my form until the last minute, and last of all my financial results. I couldn't bear looking at them. I don't think I am having a good year.

Result = "strong performer"; one of my "best years" - 93% chargeable target, 94% billing target. Just goes to show that the period you choose to capture information over can really make a difference. This financial year I'd suggest each is below 80%!

What a result. My perception -vs- their perception is totally different. But I know through my interview technique that if someone else speaks, shut up. And with lawyers, they love to speak! So I let their tongues do the talking.

BTW - the first post with the Air.

Tax Refund

Yay! Nothing sweeter than a tax refund.

In fact, even better is that I've overpaid tax for the last 5+ years so I'll now be working that out and expecting a refund for each year I can still claim as much as (if not more) than this refund for 2010-2011.

The Paralysis Of Fear

Last night the radio woke me up around 2h30. I no longer stress about not sleeping. I simply regret that I'll wake up tired after, eventually, getting back to sleep.

I know that sleep will come. I know when it happens because I dream. When I dream I know it and I know that I am sleeping.

I got back to sleep sometime around 4h30. Then something happened. I heard a noise outside and perhaps imagined something inside. Someone coming into the room, just out of the corner of my eye.

In the instant I was aware that I was asleep. Yet I tried to drag myself out of the sleep. I couldn't. What irony. I heard myself moan. I was even more sure that someone was in the room, and I could see them (in the event it was the crushed pillow looming in front of my face).

Again I tried to drag myself out of sleep. I simply couldn't. Then when I was awake that evil trick happened again. I wasn't sure if I was awake. I thought I was but it wasn't so different from before. There was a horror. I couldn't move. I couldn't do anything to help my perceived horror.

February 14, 2012

I may not be going out to dinner with my valentine tonight, but nevertheless I came home promptly to enjoy my valentine's day gift.

There's nothing like unwrapping an Apple product. They are lovingly packaged and it's a discovery into pleasure finding the delights stuffed inside.

So, now, I have a new Apple family member. I now have an orchard.... 3xMacBooks, 2xiPod touch, 1xiPod, 1xiPod mini, 1xiPhone, an iPad and now the 11 inch MacBook Air.

That said, I'll be my usual anal self and not use it, so as to keep it pristine and unspoiled. It will come out of its Crumpler neoprene sleeve (I only use Crumpler, they feel and look safe, robust, thorough) only to touch and look at, at least initially!

You Will Be Converted

Sometimes I fantasize about conversion. Today sees the re-release of Tomb of the Cybermen (with even more extras). Accordingly the process was once again on my mind.

Stopping short of the glowing injection (I hate needles, really I do), on balance I think I prefer to stay the way I am. After all, the Cybermen don't ever actually get the benefit of their technically enhanced longevity.

Happy Valentines Day

Oh la la! I took out my valentines day gift that Xfe left behind, for tomorrow morning. But it wasn't wrapped and I saw what it is....

A Coarse Line

hard at study
Yesterday and today I was on a study course at the College of Law. Except that it wasn't the course I expected to be on.

Whether the difference in expectation was my fault or the fault of the person that asked me if I would go (the request was sent to 2 senior colleagues and to me, asking if any of us would attend). Without looking into the detail, I said I would.

It suited me - I already had taken Thursday (tomorrow) and Friday as holiday, so the chance of being out of the office on Tuesday and Wednesday squared the circle if I was to take Monday as a holiday - which I did.

The problem was it was for newly qualifieds and those up to 3 years post qualifying experience. Where I was in, erm, 1995.

The focus was what I specialise in.

What a stress - I had to pretend I was there for other reasons to cover my embarrassment. Then I had to try to sound not too much like a smart arse.

Hey ho!

Safe As

Our neighbour has just agreed an offer to sell the house next door for £540,000. All the houses in the street are identical.

However ours has an attic conversion so has an extra floor with en suite bedroom.

Theoretically (and also because it has been modernised inside, next door is not), we should be able to get even more, were we to sell (we're not).

What A Difference A Play Makes

My weekend got off to a fantastic, happy start. I got to offer someone a job.

We run a vacation scheme. There are 40 places. Out of the 40 that go to "boot camp" 20 will get training contracts.

From getting on to the vac scheme, it's their performance that will now count...

The former candidate was so thrilled when I made the call around 7pm this evening.

The process was...enlightening. More of which later.

I Don't Know Why I Don't Like All My Friends

Just think about it.

They ask you what you are up to and you give them the wrong information?
I just don't know why. I don't like all my friends.

At last January is over, horrible month.

I am super looking forward to the garden this spring and summer. I think I am going to focus on chilli growing after the success of last years lot. Many varieties this time.

On Friday I am interviewing trainee candidates for future training contacts. I love the people part of my job.
